Recap and Review: Kamen Rider Drive Episode 3

The first case has been solved but the threat of the Roidmudes still remains.  The S.C.U. still have a long way to go before the Roidmudes are gone but what awaits them this week.  Let's kick things off with episode three of Kamen Rider Drive "Who took her smile?".  We find out from two students that two of their female classmates were taken during a Slowdown event by a monster.  Otta decides to bring in team after hearing this from the boys.  Back at the station we see Tomari being lazy before Kiriko drops by to chew him out for this since he is a Kamen Rider.  They find out about the case Otta was on and begin to head out. The Shift Car Dream Vegas drops by to say hi which surprises Kiriko.

They quickly head out to investigate the scene.   They confirm the presence of Slowdown and speculate the monster story is true.  Otta doesn't believe it because he believes in nothing which prompts Kyu to tell him about the haunted art studio.  A housewife saw ghost like figures in the area along with experiencing Slowdown.  This brings him into conflict with Otta but Jun breaks it up by sending Kyu with Kiriko and Tomari to investigate the studio.  On their way there Buckle fills Tomari in on how the Shift Cars are all on separate cases and Vegas was investigating a Roidmude Kiriko had a bad encounter with.  The artist Asaya Kazuhiro welcomes them at the studio and seems to take a particular interest in Kiriko. He asks her to model for him and shows her a collection of paintings of women.  Fujimiya Hajime, the artist apprentice, interrupts saying it is rude to approach her so forcefully.  He gets a tongue lashing for lacking creativity when it comes to his drawings.  A Slowdown happens that gives the Paint Roidmude the opportunity to turn Kiriko into a pile of colored strings.  Vegas arrives to back the monster off with a few card tricks and the others arrive to give Tomari and Kiriko immunity and the chance to fight back.  Tomari henshins and takes on the colorful beast.  He attempts to drop a large cement block on our hero but misses and gets a kick for his trouble.  Drive's tire almost gets disintegrated by Vegas drops by to Tire Change and give Drive a pair of coin like weapons.  Tomari tries to go for the finish but the slot machine doesn't hit the right markers and drops a penny for his trouble.  Paint takes the opportunity to escape and leave our heroes a bit baffled by the luck based power.

We cut to Heart and Brain running down one of their own who robbed a bank in a very loud manner.  051 sees Chase, who he calls the reaper, above him and tries to fight him off. Chase henshins into his Rider-like form he quickly dispatches the rouge Roidmude before Brain captures his number state inside his tablet.  He mentions Paint being the same way before being taken down which causes our trio of villains to keep a eye on him.  Back with our Dynamic Duo they are taking some Density Shift particle readings before the artist and his assistant say hi and pass them by.  Back at the pit they look over the case and Tomari concludes that they have to wait it out until Paint makes a mistake since they can't trace the particles.  Kiriko doesn't like this conclusion and will not wait this one out.  She decides to continue to investigate while Tomari hears about where Kiriko was during the Global Freeze.  She was directing traffic at the time and was attacked by a Roidmude who could do the whole turn people into colored sting thing.  010 was the one who did this and she was saved by Vegas, Dimension Cab, and a unknown individual known as Proto-Drive.  P.D. ran the Roidmude off and I assume this is how she was recruited to the cause.  We also find out Kamen Rider is there nemesis and even P.D. was called this.  Buckle also says P.D. lost his life fighting the Roidmudes and also couldn't destroy their cores, the floating numbers.

In the storage room Kiriko finds a note from Hajime telling her to drop by the studio because he has something to tell her about the case.  She finds the place empty when she arrives.  Tomari is pondering the case at the station when Kyu puts together a list of missing women from around the studio.  Tomari recognizes one of the picture and puts together the case and heads off to find Kiriko.  She likewise figures it out by seeing the various paintings in the studio are the missing people.  Hajime gets her out of there only to attack her himself.  He is 084 and has the same ability as 010.  Kiriko is caught in the Slowdown before Tomari comes in for the save.  He explains how he put it together and gives Kiriko Hajime's sketchbook to go along with the painting she manage to get out of the studio.  Tomari henshins to take the Roidmude down but gets caught up in his webbing.  Massive Monster and Spin Mixer arrive to free Drive and provide him with a couple more Tire Changes.  Spin Mixer stops the monster in his place and with Monster himself Tomari puts a end to the up and coming artist.  The people in the sketchbook return to normal but the painting remains the same which Kiriko surmises means 010 is still around and he is Paint aka Asaya.  They are stopped in their tracks by Chase who arrives to put a end to Drive here and now.  Buckle seems to recognize him and Chase henshins to take on our hero.  The two begin their battle as we end this week's episode.

This week was a good episode that gave us a look into Kiriko's past and teased P.D. once more. Kyu gets to stand out a little but once more remains a secondary character this week which is understandable since this week is not about him.  Kiriko gets the spotlight this week and we see that she can be raddled when it comes to her past although she seems determined to push past it and become stronger even though she seems a bit stubborn about it.  Tomari gets to find out more about his partner and the Kamen Rider title itself although many questions still remain about what transpired between her, Buckle, and P.D. during the six month time skip.  Speaking of the shadow rider I have thought that he and Chase were one in the same due to a multitude of hints between this episode and the first one.  This week being the bits of purple on the P.D. suit.  Weather these two are one in the same is still yet to be confirmed I am willing to put money on that relationship turning out to be true.  Chase looked great in his debut episode and I can't wait to see more of him in the coming weeks.  The three new Shift Cars were nice and provided some great moments in the action of this episode.  Overall a good episode with plenty to chew on and leaves one wondering what is next in this case.  Next week Paint does his best to throw to team off, Kiriko faces her past and Chase shows off just what he can do.
